Vox Populi
Compiled by CARISA R. CARAIG
“I do affirm the statement given by the Philippine government regarding China’s claim on Spratly Islands. At one point, China has no basis under the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) because the jurisdiction on the
relevant waters, seabed, and subsoil which China claims belong to the Philippines.”
- Mae Lalaine de Leon, 4POL1

They probably have the right, but we do too. I’m neutral on this issue however.
- Zy Carreon, 4SCL1

They have no right. China just wanted the Spratly
Islands because of the natural resources it possesses. It was already given to us, why do they have to claim what was already given to us?
- Kara Castro, 4LIT

They have to look at the United Nations standards in defining Special Economic Zone. Spratly Islands should be divided to the countries claiming it. China, might as well, have the right in the island.
- Julius Romel Fernandez, 3CA4

China is only using Spratly’s geographic location as a front to claim the disputed islands. Its real agenda is to regulate Spratly’s oil reservoir.
- Maria Theresa Lampa, 4JRN1

No, because aside from Myanmar, Philippines is the country nearest to the Spratly Islands. China is 260.6 miles away from the island and it does not follow the territorial law of the sea.
- Meagan Chiong, 2BES2

No. It does not necessarily mean that Spratly Islands belong to China because it is located in the South China Sea. Geographically speaking, the Philippines has the right to claim it.
- Precious Anne Carait, 4JRN2

SITUATIONER:
The right to claim the Spratly Islands has been a continuing debate among various Asian countries over the years. By virtue of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the Philippines asserted its geographic claim over the island since it is within the 200 nautical miles boundary of the country’s exclusive economic zone. But just recently, China warned the Philippine government to stop searching for oil in the region. At present, China is one of the known belligerents in claiming the territory.

In line with this, the Flame garnered the diverse opinion of Arts and Letters
(Artlets) students if China really has the right to claim sovereignty over the
disputed islands.
