Smart Communications, and Digital Telecommunications Philippines, Inc., operator of Sun Cellular. Students believe that Smart and Sun are disrupting the signal of Globe causing the latter’s poor service in the area.

Majority of the students in UST are Globe subscribers. Normally, the Thomasian community experiences problems in mobile phone signal during
Paskuhan only, but in the present situation, poor signal during school days has become an everyday dilemma for all.

Due to the annoying service provided by Globe, some of my block mates are encouraging me to buy a Sun sim card to overcome the problem, but I always pass up because of the hassles brought about by the changing of contact details.

A few weeks ago, I was waiting for an important text message from a friend but due to the poor signal inside the campus, it got delayed. I was very upset so I immediately called Globe’s customer service to report the incident. The representative informed me that their signal does not have a problem in the area, adding that maybe, my phone is defective that is why it keeps on receiving delayed messages. I explained to her that almost all of the students experience the same problem but she just repeated what she said and promised to give me an update soon.

I could also remember the instance when the Arts and Letters Student Council (ABSC) posted this on their Facebook page: “[Non-AB Issue] To all Thomasians who are currently experiencing delayed text messaging in UST, Globe said that there is an ongoing network activity in the area. Just wanted to share to all the Artlets who have been wondering why there is no signal at UST.”

Upon reading the post, I called up the Globe customer service again to confirm what I have just read. The customer service representative belied the post and informed me that they do not have any system maintenance or ongoing network activity near the campus.

As a senior student with many involvements and meetings inside the campus, communication plays a vital role in doing my day-to-day activities. Thomasian subscribers of Globe will have no other option but to switch to another network if Globe will not resolve the issue. Mobile phones have become a necessity for everyone because they connect and bridge people together. But once they fail to perform their primary function, they become nothing but a useless piece of gadget.

IN THIS new age of digital communication, mobile phones are considered a necessity because of the vital role they play in the society.

In the Philippines, network giants Globe Telecom, Smart Communications, and Sun Cellular dominate the telecommunication industry. As of September 2010, Smart has 46.6 million subscribers while Globe and Sun has 23.25 and 17.3 million subscribers, respectively.

A week after the University started its academic year, students have been complaining about the poor signal of Globe in the campus. Students experience dropped calls and delayed text messages every now and then, associating the problem as a result of the rumored transaction between the   Philippine  Long   Distance   Telephone   Company (PLDT), operator  of
