Artlets professors appointed as University department heads
By ALYZA KATRINA G. CABAIZ
THE UNIVERSITY administration appointed four Arts and Letters (Artlets) professors as chairpersons of university-wide academic departments this year. Professors Marilu Rañosa-Madrunio, Roberto Ampil, Paolo Bolaños, and Joyce Arriola were tapped to head the English, Filipino, Philosophy, and Literature departments, respectively.

Madrunio, who is now on her 2nd term as chair of the English department, said that since the English Studies Program (ESP) was already launched in Artlets this year, ESPrelated courses for Tourism, Law, and Business will also be introduced.

She added that the department will improve its linkages both locally and internationally with the establishment of the Dominican English Language Teachers Network, a linkage established with King Saud University in Saudi Arabia.

Ampil, who succeeded former chairperson and Artlets professor Imelda de Castro as head of the Department of Filipino, said that the department is now more focused on motivating Filipino professors at the University
to earn their doctorate degrees.

Trainings will be held to motivate and improve the knowledge and skills of the professors. Workshops will also be held every month staring this July, he said.

Replacing professor Alfredo Co as chairperson of the Philosophy department, Bolaños said that Thomasians can expect not only the continuity of programs originally implemented by Co, but also the reviving of old programs like the Thomasian Philosopher’s Union Convention which was last held in 2005.

Arriola, who is also in her 2nd term as chair of the Department of Literature, hopes to “revitalize the research agenda” of the department.

Premyo Tomas, a Quadricentennial literary award-giving body for Filipino Artists who are writing novels, epic poetries, and other creative writings, is also being eyed by the department.

Non-Artlets professors Agusto de Viana from the College of Commerce and Fernando Pedrosa from the College of Rehabilitation Sciences were assigned to head the Department of History and the Department of Social Sciences, respectively.
