Artlets celebrates Nat’l Language Month
STUDENTS from the Faculty of Arts and Letters (Artlets) celebrated the National Language Month by participating in activities that helped promote and nurture the Filipino language among themselves.
A symposium entitled Pantas Aral: Pasinaya ng Pagdiriwang ng Buwan ng Wika formally opened the Faculty’s celebration last August 1 at the Tomas Aquinas Research Auditorium. Historian and anthropologist Zeus Salazar gave a talk about the dynamism of the Filipino Language.
Salazar said amid the country’s use of English as the dominant and main language of instruction, the Filipino language continues to flourish because of its dynamic nature. “Our language is dynamic and the development of its quality resides on us,” he said in Filipino.
Salazar added that the Filipino language can be considered as an international language because of the high number of Filipinos migrating in foreign countries, further noting that migration helped in the development of the National Language.
“We can all be the initiators of this development,” Salazar said, explaining to students that the development of language starts on one’s initiative.
The Dagliang Talumpatian, an extemporaneous speech contest, followed the seminar where ten students from the Faculty’s different majors competed against each other.
Economics junior Jared Echeverria grabbed the top spot while Legal Management senior Kim Apple Carvajal and Literature sophomore John Obice ranked second and third, respectively.
Pinilakang Tabing, a film showing of original Filipino movies, was staged last August 15 at the Tan Yan Kee Audio Visual Room. The event showcased four films namely Mila, Baler, Ded na si Lolo, and Paano ko Sasabihin.
Ten students from the different majors of the Faculty competed in an essay writing contest last August 18 with the theme Ang Filipino ay WIkang Panlahat: Ilaw at Lakas ng Tuwid na Landas. Legal Management junior Dexter John Suyat won the first place while Political Science junior Kathleen Andrea Marie Rodriguez and Communication Arts junior Zam Lloyd Dorado grabbed the second and third spots, respectively.
Artlets from different majors also competed in the Tagisan ng Talino held last August 19 at the Artlets lecture room. The Political Science team dominated the competition while the Asian Studies and Journalism teams grabbed the second and third spots, respectively.
A singing contest and concert dubbed as Himigsikan was also held last August 24 as the culminating activity for the month-long celebration.
