TWO STUDENTS from the Faculty of Arts and Letters grabbed a high spot in an international water polo tournament held in Jakarta, Indonesia last July.

Together with their teammates in the Philippines Women’s Water Polo Team, Economics junior Caress Ann Gonzales and Behavioral Science senior Marvie Tierra Borja secured the third place in the women’s open division of the 6th Betawi Water Polo Tournament after defeating Indonesia, 9-2.

With only five months of preparation, the team considered their win as a sweet victory for it was their first time to compete internationally.

“I was so overwhelmed, happy, and blessed because it was our first time to compete outside the Philippines and we won. Aside from this is the fact that our
February and the victory was a big achievement for us,” Gonzales said.

Meanwhile, the team is busy preparing for another water polo tournament to be held in Malaysia this coming September. They are also aiming to compete as the country’s pioneering women’s water polo team in the South East Asian (SEA) games to be held at Palembang, Indonesia this November.

“We are focusing on the tournament in Malaysia this coming September. We hope to perform well in that competition because it will serve as our basis if we are capable enough to compete in the SEA games where participants are tougher and stronger,” Borja said.

Water Polo is a water sport played with six field players and a goalkeeper wherein the team who scores the most number of points wins the game.
